SKUAST-K holds 10-day skill training on sericulture

Srinagar, July 7: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir held a 10-day skill enhancement training programme on ‘Sericulture –An Economically Viable Source for Increasing Farm Income’ at COTS, Mirgund.

The online skill training was organised by SKUAST-K’s College of Temperate Sericulture, Mirgund from June 28 to July 7 through online mode under ICAR-World Bank funded National Higher Education Project (NAHEP). Students and teachers from the various faculties of the SKUAST-K participated in the training.

Resource persons from diverse fields of specializations deliberated on skill and entrepreneurship development, value addition in sericulture and allied issues. Dr P Suvidha Raju Scientist (International Expert on Cocoon Crafts), National Institute of Fashion Technology, Ministry of Textiles Govt. of India gave a detailed account about the preparation and formation of cocoon crafts from the otherwise waste cocoons which was followed by a practical training session wherein students were trained on various aspects of cocoon craft-making enabling them to design and develop crafts for sale in the open market.  Experts from various entrepreneurship and financial institutions created awareness about various schemes of the government aimed at generating employment opportunities for unemployed educated youth. IAS couple Dr Syed Abid Rashid Shah and Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar shared their experience with the students and gave some important tips about how to crack the civil services examinations through sustained efforts. Associate Dean College of Temperate Sericulture Mirgund Prof MF Baqual while highlighting the significance of such programmes for the betterment of student community hailed the students and the organisers for the successful conduct of the programme and expressed that such programmes should be conducted at frequent intervals. Speaking at the valedictory function Director Planning and Monitoring SKUAST-Kashmir Prof NA Ganai, congratulated the organisers for successfully conducting this event on skilling the students in innovation and entrepreneurship in sericulture.
